No fewer than eight persons including a policeman and two women were reportedly killed when a gang of armed robbers launched a coordinated, simultaneous attacks on several banks Thursday evening at Uromi in Edo State.
Sources said that the invaders came in their number shooting sporadically before using IEDs to blow up bank premises along Mission Road in Uromi.
The attacks on over four banks (names withheld) was said to have lasted over one hour.
Uromi town, is the headquarters of Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The gunmen believed to be armed robbers, launched simultaneous attacks on the financial institutions without any immediate response from security agencies.
A resident of the community, the home town of the late Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, Chief Tony Anenih, who pleaded anonymity, said that the attacks on the banks were too coordinated.
The source, who described the attacks as “too coordinated in commando style” lamented that the attacks are “novel in this town”.
According to him, “the sporadic shots by the armed robbers caused panic in the town. The robbers came prepared. People we’re seen just running helter-skelter”.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Kontongs Bello, when contacted, reportedly confirmed the attacks, saying, ” that’s true sir”, but did not provide further details.
