The Federal Ministry of Health has organised a five-day specialised workshop for some of its staff on how to improve internally generated revenue (IGR) in the sector.

The ministry’s Deputy Director of Finance and Accounting, Zakari Mohammed Bomoi, in his keynote address, said there was a need for the trainees to be equipped with the know-how on the importance of internally generated revenue for financing expenditures in ministries, departments and agencies of the government.

He said, “It was designed to train participants by imparting knowledge on methods of improving internally generated revenues in the public sector, with emphasis on the health sector. Some of the sources of our internally generated revenue in the ministry include PAYE, stamp duty, VAT, withholding tax, bidding documents and direct assessment, among others.”

The training, according to him, was to create awareness and guide them on their responsibilities.

An expert on public finance management, Abdullahi Busari, who was the lead facilitator for the training, mentioned some of the measures to tackle loopholes in revenue generation to include continuous expansion in the use of information and communication technology in monitoring, regular verification and reconciliation of revenue collection, remittance and accounting.
