The Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Information and Strategy, Hon Stephen Ogundipe has described the suggestion by a former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olabode George calling on President Bola Tinubu to convene a meeting of elderstasmen over prevalent insecurity in the country as a welcome development.
Ogundipe made this remark during an interview with our correspondent, urging states at the border lines to speed up security to curtail kidnapping.
Daily Champion reports that a chieftain of PDP in Lagos State, Bode George had called on Tinubu to urgently have a meeting with other statesman and past leaders to provide wayout of the quagmire.
He noted during an interactive session with the newsmen in his office at Ikoyi, Lagos that the level of insecurity is horrendous.
He reiterated the establishment of state police, saying the current system where command centre is located in Abuja would not work.
The PDP chieftain said, “Mr Tinubu must not shy away from state police. He must go and get the report of the report of the constitutional conference (2014). The constitution is also part of the obstacle that is recklessly disturbing the growth of the country.
“Right now we are on the precipice of total collapse. We are failing. The report of the constitutional conference was dropped to the archive. The report of putting it in the archive is what we are experiencing now.
“The President must invite all those elders in the military to come because is now a national calamity. This invite is very very urgent. It is the collectivity of all hands that can resolve the issue. You would now have all those elders to share their experiences.”
While giving support to the suggestion, the Assembly spokesman said, “We are all Nigerians. He knows the proper channel for him to do that. It is a welcome development.
“The President is a listening one and I’m sure, he is going to take it up,” the chairman stated.
Ogundipe added, “The Lagos Government is doing its best through the Security Trust Fund. We are encouraging people to also participate by giving donation. We have to be security conscious.
“As for us in Lagos, we are tightening our security and we encourage others especially those close to the borders to also do the same.”
The lawmaker who represents Oshodi-Isolo Constituency I, urged citizens to always provide information to security agencies, saying that would go a long way in addressing the menace.
“We should speak out to the security agencies to carry out their job on intelligence gathering. All hands must be on deck. It is no longer a matter of being rich or poor. It’s a tsunami affecting all of us.”
