LASG gaining public trust through transparency – Sanwo-Olu
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says his administration has prioritised transparency and it has helped to enhance public trust in the government.
He, therefore, urged auditors-general in the country to prioritise transparency and accountability to foster good governance.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said this on Wednesday during the 54th bi-annual conference of federal and state auditors-general held at Ikeja GRA.
Speaking at the conference attended by auditors-general from 32 states, Sanwo-Olu highlighted some of the initiatives organised by the state government.
“In Lagos State, we have consistently prioritised transparency and accountability, and our commitment to accountability is reflected in the Lagos State Public Procurement works, the open budget quarter, and the digitisation of government services.
“These efforts have enhanced public trust and improved service delivery. Performance auditing goes beyond traditional financial auditing. It assesses whether government programmes and projects are achieving their intended objectives effectively.
“So to build a robust accountability system in Nigeria, collaboration between federal and state auditors-general is very essential, sharing best practices, harmonising all standards and investing in capacity building to promote transparency.”
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary/state Auditor-General, Dr Muyiwa Adetola, noted that auditors bore the critical responsibility of ensuring that public resources “are managed efficiently and that government institutions are held accountable for their performance.”
He added, “Performance auditing, therefore, is a vital tool in driving fiscal responsibility and enhancing service delivery to the people.”
On his part, the Auditor-General of the Federation, Shaakaa Chira, who was represented by a Director in the Office, Damilola Olorunyomi, urged auditors to explore innovative solutions that will transform the profession and align our work with national development priorities.”
