Tony Onyemaechi Elumelu is a force to be reckoned with in the African business landscape. Born on March 22, 1963, in Jos, Nigeria, he’s an economist, banker, serial entrepreneur, industrialist, seasoned leader, proficient administrator, oil and gas mogul, financial disruptor, and philanthropist who’s making waves globally.
As the chairman of Heirs Holdings, United Bank for Africa, and Transcorp, Elumelu’s influence extends far beyond Nigeria’s borders.
By virtue of his rare accomplishments, Elumelu stands as a defining figure in Africa’s economic narrative. His journey from a “copier salesman” to the chairman of a global investment empire serves as a blueprint for the “New Africa”—one driven by private enterprise rather than aid.
Interestingly, his journey began in the banking sector, which was characterized by rapid ascent, strategic acquisitions, and the transformation of a legacy institution into a pan-African centre.
Elumelu worked with Union Bank as a corps member, during his National Youth Service Corps in 1985, before starting his career as a salesman. He subsequently joined Allstates Trust Bank. Captivatingly, he Joined as an entry-level analyst after writing a bold application letter despite having a 2:2 degree , none the less ,he became Nigeria’s youngest-ever bank branch manager at age 27.
A man with Midas touch, Young Tony led a group of investors to acquire the distressed Crystal Bank Limited in 1997. He rebranded it as Standard Trust Bank (STB) and turned it profitable within a few years. By 2004, STB had become Nigeria’s fifth-largest bank.
As a “Turnaround Expert” in Banking and Investment , Elumelu’s career is marked by bold, transformative moves that reshaped the African financial landscape. He orchestrated the historic 2005 merger between Standard Trust Bank and the United Bank for Africa (UBA), turning it into a pan-African powerhouse now operating in 20 African countries and four continents.
Remarkably, this execution became the largest merger in sub-Saharan African banking history by combining STB with the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and he took over as Group Managing Director (GMD) of the newly formed entity. He stepped down in 2010 and currently chairs the board of the United Bank for Africa Plc.
The Architect of Africapitalism
At the core of Elumelu’s impact is Africapitalism, his signature economic philosophy. It posits that the African private sector must lead the continent’s development through long-term investments that create both economic prosperity and social wealth.
For him “Africapitalism,” emphasizes the private sector’s role in driving economic growth and social wealth in Africa. He’s a vocal advocate for enduring investments in strategic sectors, aiming to create success and communal treasure.
His vision for Africa’s future involves empowering entrepreneurs to drive economic transformation and social change. He believes that African entrepreneurs can solve the continent’s challenges and create sustainable businesses.⁶
Besides, he is making waves in African entrepreneurship with his vision of Africapitalism, in Africa. Through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, he has empowered thousands of young African entrepreneurs, providing them with non-refundable seed capital, training, and mentorship.
He advocates for a move away from “charity” toward “true partnership” and investment and his businesses focus on strategic sectors like power, energy, and financial services to build a self-reliant continent.
Philanthropy and Empowerment
In 2010, Elumelu founded The Tony Elumelu Foundation, which has committed million of dollars to empower many African entrepreneurs over a decade. The foundation’s flagship programme, the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP), has trained 2.5 million young Africans across 54 countries and provided over 24,000 entrepreneurs with non-refundable seed capital.
The Tony Elumelu Foundation is the leading philanthropy empowering a new generation of African entrepreneurs, driving poverty eradication, catalysing job creation across all 54 African countries, and increasing women economic empowerment.
The Foundation is committed to empowering African entrepreneurs as a catalyst for the continent’s economic transformation. Perhaps his most enduring legacy is his commitment to “institutionalizing luck” for the next generation of African leaders.

On his 63rd birthday, the Foundation announced its 12th cohort, selecting 3,200 young Africans to receive $5,000 seed grants each, with a new focus on AI thinking and green business management.
Also, businesses supported by TEF have collectively created an estimated 1.5 million jobs and generated over $4.2 billion in revenue across the continent.
In 2010, he founded Heirs Holdings, which maintains a portfolio of investments across several sectors. Through Heirs Holdings, Elumelu holds a controlling interest in Transnational Corporation, a diversified conglomerate with business interests in Power, Hospitality and Energy.
Only last year, his company, Heirs Energies, Africa’s leading indigenous integrated energy company, acquired the entire 20.07% equity stake (120.4 million ordinary shares) previously held by Maurel & Prom S.A. in Seplat Energy Plc at a price of GBP3.05 pence per share, valuing the transaction at approximately US500 million.
Energy pundit noted that the acquisition represents a further milestone in Heirs Energies’ long-term strategy to strengthen indigenous participation in strategic assets and accelerate sustainable energy development and security for Nigeria and Africa.
Commenting on the transaction, Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Energies, said:“This acquisition reflects our strong belief in Africa’s ability to own, develop, and responsibly manage its strategic resources. It is a long-term investment in Nigeria’s and Africa’s energy future, and aligns with our mission to drive energy security, industrialization, and shared prosperity. Seplat Energy has built a resilient, well-governed platform with compelling long term prospects, and we are pleased to support its continued growth and value creation for all stakeholders.”
This landmark achievement was supported by two leading African financial institutions—Afreximbank and AFC—further demonstrating Africa’s capacity to finance its own deals.
