Abia State Government has called on the good people of Aba, especially those involved in street trading to heed the Clarion call by Government to leave the streets and go to the various markets in Aba and carry out their trading to safeguard the new roads that government is being constructed in Aba.
Commissioner for Information and Culture,Prince Okey Kanu who made this known while briefing Newsmen at the Government House, Umuahia on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting, said in the coming days and weeks, Government will begin the enforcement of ban on Street trading in Aba.
According to him,”The issue of Street trading is giving government some concerns and with the construction works going on in Aba,the new roads being constructed, government efforts in those regards will not pay off very well if something serious is not done about Street trading.
” So in the coming days and weeks,alot of enforcement work will be carried out in Aba with regards to Street trading” he said.
He however informed that, Abia government led by Governor Alex Otti being compassionate would add human face to its activities, revealing that Government will give some grace periods to those who engaged in Street trading,added that some sensitization exercise is being carried out and once government is done with sensitization programs,it would be time for enforcement.
In his contribution, the Special Adviser to Governor on Trade, Commerce and Industry,Chief Nwaka Inem, urged Aba Street Traders to either enter the markets or go to the various malls built in Aba to carry out their trading activities.
He explained that Abia State government can not spent millions and billions of Naira repairing the streets as shops,that it is repaired for motors to pass through them, while maintaining that Streets Trading in Aba is unacceptable.
