ALGON hails govs for keeping off LG affairs

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has commended state governors for allowing local government chairmen the freedom to manage local councils without interference, following the Supreme Court’s judgment granting local government autonomy.
In a communique issued on Tuesday in Abuja, following its National Executive Council meeting in Katsina State on December 14, ALGON also expressed satisfaction that over 30 states had conducted local government elections, with duly elected officials now in place.
The communique highlighted key resolutions from the meeting that reaffirmed the association’s commitment to strengthening local governance in Nigeria.
ALGON expressed its gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support in empowering local governments to fulfill their constitutional mandates.
The judiciary was also commended for its role in establishing a viable local government system that aligns with the popular will of the masses.
“The NEC appreciated the efforts of state governors and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum in conducting elections across local government areas, with over 30 states now having democratically elected chairmen.
The remaining states are hereby urged to follow suit to ensure a fully people-oriented system, according to the vision of Mr. President,” the communique read.
“NEC also appreciates the governors for the uninterrupted access given to local councils in the various states, which has contributed significantly to ensuring that democratic dividends reach the people.”
The association further expressed confidence in continuing its strong relationship with the governors, emphasising their shared commitment to governance.
In reaffirming its dedication to good governance, ALGON pledged to deepen its symbiotic relationship with stakeholders, promoting transparency, accountability, innovative service, and uniformity in service delivery at the grassroots level.
Effective communication and community engagement were noted as the foundation for open governance.
