C’River magistrates begin indefinite strike today

Magistrates in Cross River State have declared an indefinite strike beginning from today (Monday), following the government’s failure to address their 8-point demands concerning welfare, promotions, and improvements to their working conditions.
The Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Cross River State Chapter, announced the resolution in a bulletin on Sunday signed by its chairman, Godwin Onah, and secretary, Solomon Abuo.
The association emphasised that the strike would continue indefinitely until all their demands are met.
The strike follows several months of unsuccessful negotiations, including a series of warning strikes and formal communications with the state government.
The bulletin outlined that the association’s demands were first communicated to the government in a meeting on November 5, 2024.
It also mentioned the letter sent to the governor on November 11, 2024, and the extension of their strike notice until November 22.
“Despite this, the government failed to respond or initiate negotiations. As a result, all magistrates in the state have been instructed to abstain from all official duties, including court sittings, until further notice,” the bulletin stated.
The association called for strict compliance with the strike action, which is intended to persist until their demands are fully addressed.
