Dino Melaye, former Kogi Senator, has called for the resignation of Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged misconduct of the general elections held on February 25.

BIN reported that INEC declared the All Progressive Congress’ Bola Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election.

Melaye had claimed to have spotted some electoral irregularity, commercialisation and compromise on the part of the commission.

In a Twitter post on Saturday, the former senator said, “Prof Mahmud Yakubu must resign.”

He added that the chairman “has proven he superintend over a criminal enterprise and YAHOO YAHOO INEC, such level of criminal audacity & impunity bastardizes the rule of law and diminished him as a referee who scored a goal in a match. Mahmud must goooo.”

Melaye’s call comes against the backdrop of threat of lawsuit filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on the allegation that Yakubu rigged the presidential election.

The party had called for the police and the Department of State Services, DSS, to investigate the INEC boss over alleged manipulation of election results.

The PDP said the call followed further review of the “the widely-condemned infractions, brazen violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 and criminal manipulation and alteration of election results.”

PDP alleged that INEC subverted the will of Nigerians in the just concluded February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

However, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Yakubu’s press secretary, said the call was misplaced and challenged the PDP to prove its claims in the law court.
