Ember months: LASTMA sensitises motorists to road safety

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against speeding and reckless driving.
The Spokesperson for the agency, Adebayo Taofiq, in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday, noted that LASTMA had begun sensitising drivers to road safety.
He made this known while confirming that officers of the agency rescued a suspected drunk driver in an accident that occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge on Sunday.
It was gathered that the yet-to-be-identified driver was driving recklessly in a Toyota Camry along the stretch of the bridge inward Adeniji before he suffered a brake failure, ramming his car into some railings afterwards.
In a video shared by the agency, the driver was seen in an unconscious condition as traffic officers surrounded the vehicle.
The front of the car was also badly damaged and, inside the car, an empty bottle of beer was seen in the passenger’s seat.
“He was highly drunk and a bottle of beer was found on the passenger’s seat beside him. A thorough investigation revealed further that he had about seven unopened bottles of beer in his boot.
“He has been cautioned because he was overtaking and driving recklessly on the bridge before the accident,” he said.
“It’s part of the ember months’ campaign of LASTMA that people should not drink and drive,” Adebayo added.
“This is the campaign that the agency has embarked upon. We started it last Monday by visiting several garages at Ojota, Ikorodu and Ketu.
“This Monday, we are moving to Mile 2, and from there, we will go to Obalende, the Lekki-Ajah axis, to enlighten the motorists, particularly commercial drivers,” Adebayo told The PUNCH.
He noted that this was part of what the chairman of the agency, Bakara Olalekan-Oki, had been championing.
