The Minister of state on education , Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has announced plans by the Federal Government to reposition all unity schools in the country for effective teaching and learning.
– Speaking while commissioning an ultra-modern classroom block for special subjects built and donated to the Federal Government Girls owerri by the old Girls’ Association of the College
He said ” while unity schools still operating in temporary sites would be moved to permanent locations as measures would equally be applied to equip the schools with modern teaching and learning facilities to further arouse the consciousness and interest of the students in academics.”
The minister describing women as unique factors in nation building commended the old Girls Association of the college for the initiation and successful completion of the project
He noted that this had reduced the burden of the federal government in the management and running of unity schools in the country.
The Minister called for the maximum utilization of the block by the students and teachers, and advised the students of the college to always be of good behaviour to enable them to realize their worthy ambitions.
Dr. Mrs. Nkiruka Chinwe Nwachukwu the National President of the Old Girls’ Association in her remark disclosed that the association from inception had reunited alumnae from across the globe with chapters springing up in different regions with the same mission and vision.
This, according to her includes promotion of the welfare and infrastructural development of their Alma mater in order to rekindle and sustain its founding mission, vision and ideas.
Mrs. Nwachukwu who enumerated a list of the inexhaustible projects so far handled by the association however regretted that the college which is one of the oldest founded in 1973 is still the only school of its kinds sited at a temporary location.
She therefore, called for the provision of a befitting permanent site with necessary infrastructure to enable a relocation of the school as soon as possible
The Principal of the school Mrs. Obiagwu F. Chinwe in her address commended the College Old Girls Association for their innumerable contributions towards the well-being of their Alma matter.
Mrs. Obiagwu noted that the edifice designed to improve teaching and learning would go a long way in decongesting overcrowded class rooms in the college.
She however, pleaded with the federal government for urgent intervention in the areas of security, provision of more laboratories and renovation of existing ones, posting of more teachers in the core subjects especially Mathematics and Physics, renovation and equipping of the Home economics Laboratory as well as a standard examination hall.
