The supposedly suspended weekly sit-at-home protest put in place by the Indigenous Peoples Of Biafra,IPOB, to press for the release of their detained leader,Nazi Nnamdi KANU from DSS custody took a dramatic turn today in Enugu.
Commuters were placed on notice that some unknown persons were disrupting vehicular movement at Topland, Amechi Road, Enugu South Local government of Enugu State,where some vehicles were reportedly razed.
It was gathered that the said gunmen shot sporadically in the air, dispersing road users before setting a vehicle and a bus ablaze.
A shop owner in the area who spoke to on phone to newsmen on the phone said the gunmen stormed the area around 8:45am shooting sporadically into the air.
“The gunmen not wearing any uniform appeared from nowhere and started shooting into the air.
“They said they’re enforcing a the sit-at-home and burnt a vehicle and a keke that was on the road.
Security agents had risen to the occasion mobilizing to the affected areas to disperse the marauders and vehicular movements halted.
Following the sit-at-home order by the the Indigenous People of Biafra -IPOB on Mondays, the unidentified Gunmen just resurfaced today in Enugu today.
They were seen shooting sporadically in different areas in Enugu as well as burning people’s vehicles.
This particular threat made business people who had gone out for their daily activities to run back home.
Some armed men had reportedly overwhelmed Enugu state capital,this morning, shooting sporadically into the air and in virtually all directions.
Affected also were the GRA, Holy Ghost, Uwani, Trans Ekulu areas and even down to the suburbs of Abakpa Nike and environs setting residents on the run.
There was general pandemonium in Enugu state even down the rural areas following the widespread sporadic shooting by heavily armed men yet to be identified on interstate and expressway.
According to eye witness, the gunmen numbering over fifty and heavily armed, processed through the streets, charging Enugu residents to obey sit at-home order.
Eye witness accounts recall that at Holy Ghost Round About, no fewer than fifty gunmen were sighted.
“They were asking people to close their shops, obey Monday Sit at home or face the consequences” ,a witness said.
Meanwhile, another eye witness at Abakpa Nike, Ugo Nwene stated that he did not see anyone but heard gun shots.
“Out of sudden, people were running onto each other, vehicles colliding with each other, noise of gun shots, and I had to close my shop and run too”
He observed,however, that they were told that some hooded men were shooting everywhere inside the town, so we had to run for safety.
Another person who recounted his ordeal in the Uwani, and Trans Ekulu, Stella Eke said “at Uwani I just saw people running, closing shops and many vehicles reversing, no one knew who is chasing people, but we heard some people were shooting sporadically in the air.
Some persons were reportedly killed though the Police has not confirmed the incident or the casualty figure mooted to be as high as five.
The gun men had descended on market centres in the suburbs and outlying towns while the expressways and streets were deserted.
