Impunity, lack of respect for rule of law, bane of university education — EBSU VC

The Vice Chancellor, Ebonyi state University, Abakaliki, Prof. Chigozie Ogbuu. has described as the bane of University education in Nigeria the impunity and lack of respect for the rule of law which finds its way into the University with students having no regrets for University regulations.
He lamented that some lecturers with no integrity succumb to intimidation, enticement of money or sex and even without promoting, extort money/sex from students and do more harm to the society by passing a student who did not merit to pass.
Ogbuu made this remarks while briefing journalists on the activities lined up for the 12th — 15th convocation which covers graduands from 2019 to 2022 years.
He said that the University problem continues with a non academic staff wit the stroke of a pen changes the grade of a student for the same reason.
The Vice Chancellor regretted that those anti society activities in the University were encouraged and supported by people outside the University and sometimes from the parents who want their children to pass at all cost.
He pointed out that a regular conventional University is not a place you come to acquire technical skills, adding that it is a place to nurture students to achieve the full potential of their intellectual and thinking capacity along with good character
According to him, “It is the failure in those areas of proper and academic development of University graduates, occassioned by the atmosphere in the universities that produce the poor outcome of University products.
Ogbuu maintained that there is nothing wrong with the curricular of universities if they were properly implemented to realize their academic content
He called on all the proprietors of Nigerian universities to provide adequate teaching materials, conducive learning environment and give support to University management to ensure discipline, obedience to rules and promote dignity of labour in our University.
“The University, citadel of learning and moulding of character which is supposed to be the Pathfinder for society interns of intellectual, moral and character development has been so corrupted by society in Nigeria.
“The impunity and lack of respect for the rule of law that is in the society finds its way into the University with students having to regards for University regulations”.
