Lawrence Metu @ 80: A man of service, honour and compassion

Chief Lawrence Metu, (Chinyelugo na Umuchu), who retired as a fine public servant with the Nigeria Customs Service, is a highly compassionate leader, administrator and one of the “silent labourers ” in Umuchu, his home town in Anambra State, Nigeria.

Sincerely speaking, birthdays, by definition, are significant milestones in individuals’ lives and cause for celebration by family, friends, and, of course, the celebrants themselves. Certain birthdays–such as the 16th, 21st, and the turn of decades–carry special cultural and practical significance. Eighteenth birthdays take a rightful place in this category of particularly noteworthy birthday celebrations; thus we use today to eulogise Chief Lawrence Metu’s milestone of clocking eight decades on planet Earth, with an attitude of a titan that bestrides the landscape with composure.
The measure of this prodigious man of our time is seen in terms of the forte of his leadership commitments, strong capacity, the genuineness of his friendships, the sincerity of his purpose, the quiet courage of his convictions, his capacity to suffer and his willingness to endure in order to achieve success and put smiles in the faces of many.

Chief Lawrence Metu is celebrating his 80th birthday while his beautiful heartthrob, Lolo Nwanneka Metu, is also celebrating her 70th birthday.

It’s wonderful to wish a great leader like him a happy birthday. He has made significant contributions to Umuchu, in Aguata LGA of Anambra state and Nigeria.

Born on January 3rd 1945, to Late Udensi & Nwaogazi Metu, Chief Law is a living example of how grace and fortitude can be combined to achieve astonishing results in life.

He was raised by dedicated parents who instilled in him the values of discipline, service, and education. He completed his elementary and secondary schooling in his hometown, and later advanced to the University of Lagos, where he pursued his university education and laid the foundation for a life of professional excellence. Upon graduation, he joined the Nigeria Customs Service, where he built a distinguished career marked by integrity, diligence, and leadership.

Metu is brilliant and God-fearing man who has continued to be a blessing to the Catholic church in his community and in Lagos. He has hence, bagged several awards within Umuchu, Anambra state.

As a mark of his impact in the society, Lawrence Metu, was honored by his community as Chinyelugo na Umuchu.

His commitment to duty saw him rise through the ranks to the esteemed position of Comptroller of Customs.

Beyond his professional achievements, Lawrence Metu is widely respected for his unwavering devotion to human development and community upliftment. His consistent efforts to support, mentor, and empower others earned him the revered chieftaincy title of Chief Chinyelugo, a recognition of his generosity and impact on the lives around him.
The leaders in Umuchu describe him as an illustrious son of the community who had through numerous ways , contributed immensely to the growth and development of the community
They noted that his contributions to the community is heart-warming and worthy of emulation and urged other public servants to emulate the sterling accomplishments and life of service of Chinyeleugo.

Interestingly, Law Metu is one man who is committed to the peaceful development of his community and has made every effort to ensure the peace and prosperity of his people. His commitment to a life of public good has brought so much goodwill and honour to the people of his community and local government area.

As we extol his virtues, It’s inspiring to see him achieve more milestones. I wish him more years of good health and continued success in his endeavors.
