According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), grandmasters of data, Globacom, led other telecommunications service providers in 23% growth in internet subscribers as at Q3, 2020. The growth brings the total number of data users to 151,063,413 million from 122,792,291 at the same period in 2019.
Between September, 2019, and September, 2020 Globacom enjoyed a 33.2 percent growth in its internet subscriber base, while MTN and Airtel both grew by 24.5 and 21.4 percent respectively. The fourth telecommunications network, 9mobile, suffered a 14% decline in its internet subscriber figures during the period under review.
Globacom’s data services are powered by the huge capacity international submarine cable called Glo-1, a wholly owned facility that brought unprecedented bandwidth from Europe to Nigeria and other West African countries. It’s noteworthy performance in the reported quarter can be attributed to the attractive and unmatched data packages.
Globacom offers 7GB to its subscribers for only N1500, and 50GB for only N10,000. The network also has what it calls Mega Data plans for Home Broadband users such as Small Office Home Office (SOHO) and SME customers as well as high end customers who have the need for higher data benefits with longer validity periods. Furthermore, it also offers numerous social data plans that cut across the needs of customers.
