Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has justified suspension of operations of AZMAN Airline hinging the suspension onĀ issues relating to non-adherence to safety and maintenance Ā of its airlineĀ as prescribed the agency.
Capt.Musa Nuhu, Director General of NCAA gave the explanation, when he appeared before Senate Committee on Aviation chaired by Senator Smart Adeyemi.
Musa said NCAAĀ had in theĀ early hours of March 16, suspended operations of AZMAN airline forĀ failure to comply with aviation safety guidelines and adherence to maintenance practice of its aircrafts.
He told the Senate panel that inspections by NCAA showed that there wereĀ issues with AZMA’s maintenance procedures, guidelinesĀ that were not been followed among other issues relating to safety of its operations.
“WeĀ invited their people to come and sit with us , we discussed, we thought we had resolved the issue, but there was a fine against theĀ AirlineĀ and the Captain.
“We did not want toĀ grand them then, and we had toĀ let them go.
” But on theĀ Feb 16,Ā the same aircraft landed inĀ Lagos, the weather was bad and it had a significant tyre failure, andĀ damage to the engine and the face large of the aircraft.
“At that point because of theĀ levelĀ of the damage to the aircraft, it now became the responsibility of the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB )whose responsibility it is to investigate seriousĀ aircraftĀ accident and Incident.
“The airline, keep having the same maintenance issues, and is of concern to me that the aircraft keep having issues.
” It will be irresponsible and criminal negligence on our own part not toĀ Ā take any action.
“I hate granding any airline, it is a lot of money for the operator, andĀ it is going to cause a lot of inconvince for a lot of air travelers, but it will be criminal not to take action.
“It is not to kill the airline but to work with the airline to see what the problems areĀ and resolve themĀ so that they can becomeĀ a safe airline where we can recommend people to comfortably go and fly,” he said.
He said the lifting of suspension of the airline wouldĀ be determinedĀ pending the conclusionĀ ofĀ a fullĀ financial, safety, security, operations andĀ maintenanceĀ audit of the airline.
On controversy surrounding construction of twoĀ airportsĀ inĀ Ā Sagamu and Wasami in Ogun state.
Musa said available records at the disposal of NCAA indicates thatĀ approval was givenĀ forĀ construction of a cargo airportĀ in Shagamu.
He, however, said he only heard of the approval for an airport forĀ Wasami, saying that there was no documentedĀ recordsĀ available to the NCAA on Wasami airport.
Chairman of the committee Sen. Smart Adeyemi said the decision of NCAAĀ to suspend the operations of the airlineĀ was tenable given the maintenance and safety issues emanating from the investigation of NCAA .
He said the committee would still write and prevail on Federal Government to see need toĀ provide further bailout fund for the aviation sector.
