…. As electricity workers assures of power supply
Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has apprehended the strike embarked upon by the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) following an emergency meeting between the union, government and other stakeholders, at the instance of the Minister of Labour and Employment.
This as the electricity workers rose from the meeting and assured Nigerians that there will be electricity supply across the country.
Ngige set up a tripartite committee to look into the grievances of electricity workers towards addressing them.
The meeting which lasted for some hours was attended by the leadership of the electricity workers union, government representatives and other relevant stakeholders in the power sector.
At the end of the meeting, the Secretary General of NUEE, Joe Ajaero, assured the Minister that all necessary steps would be taken to restore the supply of electricity to the country immediately.
Speaking, Chika Ben, President General, Association of Senior Staff of Electricity and Allied Workers expressed satisfaction with what he described as the maturity way the minister of labour and employment handled the matter, stating that the leadership of the union will report back to the union.
He further assured that the union will not put Nigerians in darkness, even as he said they will be back to the negotiation table in two weeks time.
The organised labour had directed workers in the Power sector to down tools from Wednesday. This followed a pending labour issues with the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN.
This is coming barely one month after the national grid collapsed; a development that put the country into blackout that caused huge damage to preserved dairies and other perishable food stuff.
The National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, as a prelude to the strike, the aggrieved workers scheduled to picket the Abuja national Headquarters of TCN Tuesday.
Joe Ajaero, the General Secretary of NUEE, in a circular titled “Call for Action”, to Senior Assistant General Secretaries and Zonal Organising Secretaries dated August 15, 2022, the Union directed all members to ensure total compliance.
