Nigeria strengthens climate action through methane management, CNG innovation – expert

An energy expert, Mr Fatai Quadri, says Nigeria is intensifying its climate action efforts through a growing focus on methane reduction and clean energy innovation.

Quadri, the Chief Executive Officer of Alfa Designs Nigeria Ltd., said the move reflects the country’s deepening commitment to environmental sustainability and energy transition.

He stated this in an interview on Tuesday in Lagos, Quadri highlighted methane as a critical target for emissions reduction, describing it as a greenhouse gas over 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.

He noted that methane is primarily released through leaks, venting, and flaring in oil and gas operations, making it a major driver of global warming.

“Reducing methane emissions remains one of the most cost-effective strategies to slow climate change and improve air quality,” Quadri said.

He explained that Nigeria had become an active participant in international climate initiatives, including the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP 2.0), the Global Methane Pledge, and collaborations with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC).

According to him, key national energy companies such as NNPC Ltd. and Nigeria LNG (NLNG) have joined the OGMP 2.0, aligning Nigeria with over 150 global companies from more than 90 countries, including major international players like BP, Shell, TotalEnergies, Equinor, Eni, Chevron, and ExxonMobil.

He said implementation challenges were being addressed through capacity-building programmes, stakeholder workshops, and pilot projects that use cutting-edge technologies such as drones and ground-based sensors.

“Participation in OGMP 2.0 not only enhances regulatory compliance and industry reputation but also positions Nigeria as a regional leader in methane mitigation,” he added.

Quadri described Alfa Designs Nigeria Ltd. as one of the local champions in Nigeria’s clean energy transformation, pioneering innovations in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure and Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) services.

He said the company had invested heavily in infrastructure to promote CNG as a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to diesel.

According to him, key projects include CNG Conversion Centre (Delta State), a facility for retrofitting diesel-powered trucks and generators to dual-fuel engines using Fuel Fusion Kits and Mother Compressor Station, a hub for compressing and distributing natural gas to mobile daughter stations.

Others are: Mobile Daughter Stations and Specialised Trucks, designed for safe and efficient nationwide CNG delivery and Cylinder Cascades, high-pressure mobile storage systems ensuring the safe transportation of CNG.

He added that Alfa Designs had built strategic partnerships with top global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to support these initiatives.

“Our partnerships with Dual Fuel Systems (Poland) for diesel-to-CNG/LPG retrofitting, CIMC Enric (China) for fabrication and commissioning of CNG stations, and EKC Cylinders (India) for high-quality storage cylinders enable us to deliver world-class, standards-compliant solutions tailored to Nigeria,” Quadri said.
