The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is partnering with the UNICCON group, a Nigerian technology startup company, to strengthen digital literacy in the country.

According to NITDA, it would leverage the Company’s homegrown innovation “Omeife“, a humanoid robot which has software features as a Service (OaaS).

Speaking during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in Abuja, Yau Garba, spokesperson of NITDA’s director general said that the relationship is to assist the agency and the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy in achieving the vision of 95% digital literacy rate in Nigeria by 2030.

“We are thrilled this is coming from homegrown engineers. We believe this would help deepen the digital literacy campaign of NITDA and, by extension, the Ministry. The whole idea of the collaboration is how to leverage Omeife to improve digital literacy in Nigeria,” he said.

“You can talk to it and ask for guidance. The robot could be controlled using any of the four languages in Nigeria

“The good thing is that we are leveraging four languages that are majorly spoken in Nigeria. We are talking of pidgin, Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba. We want to show that there is absolute inclusion no Nigerian would be left behind.”

Also at the ceremony, Chuks Ekwueme, the chairman of UNICCON Group, expressed his gratitude to NITDA’s director general for encouraging local technology content development  in Nigeria.

He further commended the agency for its vision to achieve 95% digital literacy rate in Nigeria by 2030, which is currently the highest target as compared to other African countries.

Ekwueme revealed that the technological framework (Omeife) that will be deployed to achieve the designed goal to aid effectiveness unlike other forms of imported technology that tend to lack adequate consideration of Africans in their development and deployment.
