The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited is now deploying Compressed Natural Gas delivery installations in all its filling stations across the country, NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, announced on Wednesday.

Kyari said the deployment of CNG installations across NNPC retail outlets nationwide was in accordance with the presidential directive on the purchase of CNG-powered vehicles by institutions of government.

On Monday, The PUNCH reported that the Federal Executive Council chaired by President Tinubu had mandated all government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, to, going forward, procure only vehicles and generators powered by CNG.

The report stated that the Federal Government also asked the MDAs to begin converting all petrol or diesel-powered vehicles or generators to CNG.

The new directive is “in line with his commitment to ensure energy security, drive utility, and cut high fuel costs,” a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Ajuri Ngelale, had stated.

Reacting to the development in his speech at the presidential commissioning of three gas projects on Wednesday, Kyari told the President that NNPC was now deploying CNG installations in all its filling stations nationwide.

“We are pleased to mention that in line with the just announced presidential directive on the purchase of CNG powered vehicles by institutions of government, and in furtherance of the overall objective of broadening CNG as an alternative fuel for automobiles, NNPC is deploying CNG delivery installations in our retail stations across the country,” Kyari stated.

He said Nigeria has significant natural gas resources of over 209 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, with the potential to grow to over 600TCF.

“As a commercial enterprise, these milestone projects present an opportunity to monetise our abundant natural gas resources, by expanding access to energy to support economic growth, industrialisation, and job creation.

“Mr President may kindly wish to note that in order to monetise our gas resources, NNPC is currently executing several major gas infrastructure projects such as the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano pipeline with the associated power plants.

“There is the full delivery of the wider OB3 project shortly and also progressing with other initiatives such as fertiliser and petrochemical plants, small and large scale LNG and floating LNG.

“Currently, NNPC is executing a Compressed Natural Gas project aimed at providing a cleaner fuel to power our vehicles as a cheaper alternative to the Premium Motor spirit,” Kyari stated.

The three gas projects located in Delta and Imo states, which were inaugurated virtually Tinubu, include the expansion of the AHL Gas Processing Plant, the ANOH Gas Processing Plant and the ANOH to OB3 Custody transfer metering station gas pipeline.

“We are pleased to inform you that the three infrastructure projects will enable additional gas processing capacity and also increase the supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, thereby reducing the dependency on importation.

“Also, the projects are fully in line with the Federal Government’s quest to derive value from the nation’s gas assets while eliminating gas flaring and moving towards environmentally friendly energy sources,” Kyari told the President and other stakeholders.

He said the projects being undertaken by NNPC and partners were in line with the Nigerian Decade of Gas agenda and consistent with the Federal Government’s effort to boost gas supply to the domestic market.

This came as the Managing Director, Oilserve Engineering Limited, Nnena Anyawun, said his company was proud to contribute meaningful to Nigeria’s transaction to cleaner fuel.

He spoke on the sidelines of the commissioning of the Assa Gas Process Treatment Facility in Ohaze/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday, according to a statement from the firm.

He said the completion of Assa Process Treatment Facility to OB3 CTMS works and the 36”x 23.3km pipeline had significantly demonstrated Oilserv Limited’s dedication to meeting project timelines, schedule, safety, quality and excellence.

“The project will turnaround the Nigerian economy. We have increased our ability to deliver on infrastructure, we have gained the skills and we have improved on our competitiveness globally.

“So by the time you think about this pipeline, how it is going to unlock gas, how it is going to contribute to Nigeria’s Decade of Gas, how it is to ensure that going forward, Nigeria is able to transition to cleaner fuel, ultimately you see that its progress for the nation,” Anyawun stated.
