NUPRC receives NAPE “Corporate Partner in Energy Policy Reforms” Award

By Yunus Yusuf

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has been honoured with the “Corporate Partner in Energy Policy Reforms” award by the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), in recognition of its pivotal contributions to the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and related energy policy reforms.

The award was presented by NAPE President, Mr Johnbosco Uche, during the association’s 50th anniversary celebration, held Thursday evening in Lagos.

Mr Paul Osu, Head of the Lagos Regional Office, received the award on behalf of the Commission Chief Executive, Mr Gbenga Komolafe.

Uche noted that the award highlights NUPRC’s instrumental role in driving positive transformation in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector through robust regulatory frameworks and stakeholder engagement.

“NUPRC has successfully spearheaded the implementation of the PIA, aimed at overhauling the oil and gas sector with forward-thinking reforms,” he said.

“The Commission has gazetted 21 strategic regulations that enhance clarity, streamline operations, and promote sustainability across the industry.

“These improvements are rooted in bold reforms, investor-friendly policies, and revised fiscal regimes introduced by the PIA.”

He further stated that the awards aim to recognise companies, professionals, students, and individuals who have significantly contributed to the growth and development of NAPE and the broader petroleum exploration industry.

Reflecting on NAPE’s legacy, Uche said the association, founded in 1975 by a group of patriotic professionals, continues to inspire unity and professional excellence in Nigeria’s energy sector.

“Our founding members laid an incredible foundation. As we celebrate 50 years, we must begin redefining the next 50 — with professionals and companies actively helping to restructure and strengthen the association for the future,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Prof. Emmanuel Enu, Chairman, NAPE’s Advisory Council, described the 50th anniversary as a symbolic milestone for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Enu revealed that NAPE currently has over 18,000 members, including 10,000 student professionals, with active efforts to grow its base further.

“Young professionals must remain committed to the association’s vision.

“They are the future. Over the next 50 years, they will take up the baton to lead and transform NAPE to greater heights,” he said.

“Currently, we have 58 active student chapters across the country, and that number is still growing.”

50 awards were presented across various categories in the oil and gas sector during the ceremony.

Notably, 24 professional members aged 80 and above received “Lifetime Achievement Awards”, while five former presidents were posthumously honoured with “Posthumous Awards.”.
