One killed, houses burnt in Ebonyi communal clash

CHIGOZIE AMADI

At least, one person was killed and no fewer than 10 houses were razed in Ndieguzu Agalegu Omege community in the Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on Saturday night.

PUNCH Metro learnt on Sunday that many people were injured after suspected hoodlums attacked the community.

Our correspondent learnt that the crisis ensued between the people of Omege Agalagu and Ukwuinyima in the council area.

Details of what led to the clash were still uncertain, but a community source who spoke to our correspondent in confidence for fear of attack said the crisis was because of a fight that occurred in November 2024 when a woman who was allegedly raped and killed was buried.

According to the source, “More than 10 houses and property worth millions of naira have been burnt to ashes. The government needs to do something.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Joshua Ukandu, on Sunday, confirmed that one person was killed in the incident.

According to him, two youths from the two communities fought and one of them from Omege was stabbed.

“He, however, died later in hospital.

“His death led to members of his community attacking Omege and burning down some mud houses with thatched roofs.

“But the police mobilised and stopped them from inflicting further damage. The crisis has been curtailed at the moment.”

The police spokesperson said operatives of the command were maintaining order in the area and had also launched an investigation.

He said the man who stabbed the victim dead had also been arrested.
