President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the retirement of Isah Jere Idris, the acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), following the expiration of his initial extended one-year tenure.
The decision comes amid concerns raised by several Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), which warned against his continued appointment.
In a secret notification addressed to Idris, dated April 17, 2023, with code number CDCFIB/APPT.CG&DCG/61/VOL.IV/74, Obasi Edozie Edmond, the secretary to the civil defence, correctional, fire and immigration services board, on the orders of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the board chairman, who is the minister of interior, informed Idris of the expiration of his tenure.
Idris has been directed to hand over the duties and responsibilities of his office to the most senior officer in the Service, pending the appointment of a substantive CG of Immigration.
It will be recalled that Idris was appointed in an acting capacity just before his retirement in April 2022 but had his tenure extended for one year ahead of its expiration.
The extended tenure will automatically elapse on April 24, 2023.
