Gender discrimination which has taken a very serious negative effect on the world today is simply the wrongful treatment of people due to their gender.

Achieving gender equality will make the world a healthier, happier place and is crucial to making lasting environmental progress and economic growth.

Globally, women’s right is celebrated in the Month of March every year. One day in a world where women suffer from discrimination and violence every single day.

Sources however, are of the view that the fight for women’s rights must last more than one day, so that is being born a girl stops being a hurdle.

The convention on the elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979 and ratified by nearly all world States, is the international bill of women’s rights.

Over the years, women’s rights defenders have made significant progress in their countries including increased representation of women in political bodies, minimum age for marriage, access to family planning, abolition of discriminatory laws, and outlawing of female genital mutilations.

But the fight is far from over and much remains to be done for CEDAW to be implemented. Many states have expressed reservations that jeopardize the rights set out in Convention, alleging incompatibility with their local traditions, religions or cultures. And none of the signatory States fully respect their commitments.

Women and girls still face discrimination that seriously compromises their day to day lives and future.

Discrimination is simply the distinct treatment of an individual or group to their disadvantage; treatment or consideration based on class, category or gender rather than the individual merit.

Gender is the classification of human being based on sex. Gender Discrimination occurs across different sectors of the society, this has been seen in the world of education, employment, politics, family roles etc.

In the world of education until the 20th century, in many countries it has not been considered important for women to get formal education. Young girls were not given the opportunity to go to school as much as boys were.

Also in the world of employment there are jobs that don’t employ more qualified individuals because of gender. In the world of politics women who are starting to aspire are given Lowe office due to gender discrimination. In the family traditional roles still dictate that women should do all the housework and childbearing instead of going to work. Achieving gender equality will make the world a healthier place and is crucial to making lasting environmental progress.
