A member of the House of Representatives from Kano State, Kabiru Alhassan, has resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Alhassan represents Rano/Bunkure/ Kibiya Federal Constituency at the National Assembly. The lawmaker who is also a gubernatorial aspirant for the party accused the state chapter of the party of preferential treatment.

He said he had done all he could to ensure that a free, fair playing ground is allowed in the cause of party politicking but the powers that be in the party have prevented that.

He added that it is unfair at this dispensation to deny Kano South the chance to produce the next governor, saying they have not gotten that chance since 1992.

His resignation followed that of his colleague, Abdulkadir Jobe, member representing Dawakin-Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa Federal Constituency, who resigned due to an internal crisis in the Kano State chapter of the party.

Alhassan, who is also a former Speaker, Kano House of Assembly is yet to officially announce the political party he is moving to. He said he is considering joining forces with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to ensure that his South Senatorial District produces the next Governor of Kano State.

INEC Chair denounces joining Presidential race

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, have declared that he has no interest in contesting the 2023 Presidential elections.

This came as a result of speculations in certain quarters that the chairman will be part of the presidential race.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to Yakubu, in a statement on Sunday said INEC’s attention had been drawn to innuendoes in certain quarters that Nigerians should not be surprised if the INEC Chairman joined the Presidential race or people urging him to do so.

“It is a preposterous proposition. It will not happen. The Chairman remains an umpire committed to free, fair and credible elections.

“His constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation and Returning Officer for the presidential election are onerous enough for him to even contemplate straying into extraneous matters at variance with the law, morality and his personal principles.

“The Chairman will continue to discharge his responsibilities without affection for, or ill-will against, any political party or candidate,” Oyekanmi said.

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has endorsed his deputy, Nasiru Gawuna, to succeed him as Governor under the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2023 general elections.

In a meeting presided over by the Governor on Saturday, Gawuna was the choice of the stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the  Governorship candidate with former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Garo, as his running mate.

Garo, who is believed to have control of the party structure at the local government level, was seen as the preferred candidate of the governor’s wife, Hafsat Ganduje.

The governor, who will be concluding his second term in May next year,  is expected to pick the senatorial ticket for Kano North Senatorial district today.

The seat is currently occupied by Senator Barau Jibrin, a member of the G-7 faction and a front runner for the governorship of the state.
