The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the Resident Electoral Commission (REC) in charge of Sokoto, Nura Ali, over the inconclusive National Assembly election in the state.

The National Assembly election in Sokoto state was said to have been marred by violence and over-voting.

In a letter signed on Monday by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, secretary to the commission, INEC ordered the REC’s replacement.

The commission also appointed Hauwa Kangiwa, the administrative secretary of the commission, to take over from Ali with immediate effect.

Kangiwa was directed to liaise with Muhammad Sani Kaita, the supervisory national commissioner, for clarifications on her new role.

“This is to inform you of the commission’s decision for you (Dr. Nura Ali), resident electoral commissioner, Sokoto State, to stay away from the commission’s office immediately until furthermore notice,” the commission said.

“The administrative secretary is directed to take full charge of INEC, Sokoto State office with immediate effect.”
