The Lagos State Safety Commission, in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, has urged market men and women to be fire safety conscious, especially during the “ember” months and Yuletide season.

Speaking on Wednesday at the flag-off of the sensitisation programme organised for traders in Balogun Market on Lagos Island, the Director General of Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, said there was a need for everyone to imbibe ways of preventing fire outbreaks, especially as the Yuletide season approaches.

He enlightened the market men and women on how to put safety precautionary measures in place to avert fire outbreaks, such as removal of combustible materials like paper, rubber and wood; unplugging of electrical iron and kettle when not in use; and keeping away flammable materials from the house.

He also advised against refuelling generators while on or very hot; overloading electrical circuits and using camp gas or cylinders indoors, amongst others.

Mojola said, “There is a need for all our market men and women to be fire safety conscious because fire is not friendly to anyone and this is the essence of sensitising our market men and women not to risk their lives and avoid anything that could cause fire outbreaks in the state.”

He also advised the general public to take all precautionary measures to prevent fire outbreaks during the forthcoming Yuletide season.

Similarly, the Director, Lagos Fire and Rescue Services, Margaret Adeseye, corroborated what the DG of the commission said, adding that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was very much concerned about the safety and well-being of the citizens, particularly the traders, which was why he approved the sensitisation programme in preparation for the Yuletide.
