Obi of Onitsha His Majesty, Igwe Nnemeka Alfred Achebe (Agbogidi), says he did not accuse the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC of aggravating insecurity nationwide due to poor outcome of the 2023 general elections and the attendant protests.

This was contained in a rejoinder sent to Champion Newspapers and signed by Tony Obiora Nezieanya, Editorial Lead Ofala Steering Committee titled:

‘False and Misleading Report on the Obi of Onitsha by Champion Newspaper’

The letter partly reads ‘’I write to express my deep concern regarding a recent report published in your esteemed publication, which falsely attributed misleading statements to His Majesty, Nnemeka Achebe, Obi of Onitsha.

“The correspondent, seems to have disregarded the truth and instead presented his inaccurate interpretation of the position of His Majesty.

In the report titled, Ofala Festival: Obi of Onitsha accuses INEC of ‘Aggravating Insecurity Nationwide’ published on October 15, 2023, claimed that His Majesty accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC of not conducting transparent polls.

“It must be clarified that these assertions were not an accurate reflection of His Majesty’s words or opinions, but rather an irresponsible misinterpretation by the writer.

“The monarch has explicitly disclaimed the statements attributed to him in the article. He has stated that the writer’s interpretation was grossly inaccurate. It is deeply concerning that such a well-respected traditional ruler has been misinterpreted in this manner, as it undermines not only his credibility but also the integrity of your publication”.
