Violent protest against BEDC averted in Akoko community

A mass protest that could have led to public disorder and lawlessness   was averted on Friday evening at Akungba Akoko, a university community in Ondo state.

The protest which was led by the President of Adekunle Ajasin University Students Union, Obagunwa Olusegun and other union leaders took a new dimension when the Manager of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and two other staffs were hijacked by the protesters who were chanting songs against non performance of BEDC in Akoko area particularly in Akungba Akoko.

The Okada riders and the youths later joined the protest.

The protesters listed non performance of BEDC, outrageous bill without light, lack of insensitivity and others as part of their grievances.

They noted that students are been exploited by BEDC, while they are paying for darkness.

The Divisional Police Officer for Akungba-Akoko, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Shakiru  Ajibola received the protesters in his office at Akungba.

The police chief addressed them, urging them to allow peace to reign for them to get positive result.

He accompanied the protesters to Ikare-Akoko where his Ikare counterpart also addressed them in the same manner.

They marched up to semusemu Ikare -Akoko BEDC office to make their demand known to them

The leader of Ikare -Akoko joint artisans group, Mr. Omotayo Olowoporoku said many artisans who relied on electricity had relocated from Akoko to elsewhere.Olowoporoku decried the poor performance of the electricity company that had to abandon their job.

A business man from Ugbe -Akoko, Pastor Olusegun Arowolo appealed to BEDC to do the needful by supplying electricity to consumers with prepaid meters, installation of more transformers and training and retraining of their staff on human and public relations.
