Some gunmen on Monday attacked a convoy of a former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, and killed four of his police orderlies in the process.

Chief Ohakim’s convoy according to sources, was attacked at Oriagu in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state on Monday evening.

The former governor,  who escaped death narrowly reportedly had his backup vehicle bombed, leading to the death of the four policemen in his convoy.

It was learnt  that Ohakim was with two of his children and returning from a visit when the gunmen attacked the convoy.

Sources further disclosed that it took the brevity of the ex-governor’s driver for him to escape.

Daily Champion gathered that, “Ohakim was the main target but his driver was smart enough to beat them because they were driving to block him. Disappointed that their main target had escaped, they blocked his backup vehicle and burnt it. The four policemen with him burnt.”

It was gathered that a reinforcement arrived the scene from Owerri, the state capital and escorted him to his house.

Meanwhile, no fewer  than two policemen cheated death by whiskers on Monday while repelling terrorists attack at police check point, Magama – Hirji Junction along Katsina – Jibia Road, Katsina State.

Daily  Champion further learnt that police neutralized one of the terrorists as they fled with gunshots injuries. The incident occurred at about 4.30am when the criminals in their numbers, shooting sporadically with AK47 rifles, stormed the junction and engaged the police in a gun duel before they were successfully repelled.

Spokesman of the state command, Gambo Isah, a Superintendent of Police (SP), who confirmed the fatal incident, said the injured policemen we’re taken to Jibia Hospital, treated and discharged.

He added that the police recovered some money, one AK47 rifle, four magazines and scores of ammunition from the scene.

Isah further assured that search parties were on the trail of the fleeing gunmen and investigation was underway, while commending the gallantry and commitment of the police officers.

In separate development the Ogun State Police Command has begun  investigation into the death of a couple, Mr Kehinde and Mrs Bukola Fatinoye, at Ibara GRA in Abẹokuta, on the New Year’s Day.

SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abeokuta.

NAN reports that Kehinde and Bukola were burnt to death when suspected arsonists set their house ablaze on January 1.

One of their children and their housekeeper were  also alleged to have been kidnapped by those behind the suspected arson.

According to Oyeyemi,  the police will  do all within their powers to reveal those behind the dastardly act. NAN gathered that the incident happened shortly after the couple returned from  ‘Cross Over Service’ to usher in the new year.

NAN also learnt that Kehinde and Bukola  were employees of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta,  respectively
