The federal government plans to repatriate Nigerians serving jail terms in Ethiopia following the death of Chizoba Eze, who died on March 12 after an alleged brutalisation by the Ethiopian police.

In a statement on Wednesday, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman, Nigerians in diaspora commission, said that the Nigerian Mission in Ethiopia will demand a full investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Eze.

The chairman added that the mission has also suggested an agreement to transfer Nigerian prisoners in Ethiopia to complete their jail terms in Nigeria.

“The Nigerian mission in Ethiopia has proposed an MOU from the Nigerian Correctional Service on transfer of sentenced persons to Nigeria with the Ethiopian authorities to complete their respective jail terms in Nigeria, and are awaiting a response from Ethiopia.”

Dabiri-Erewa said most Nigerians in Ethiopian jail were arrested for drug-related offences

She included that even though Ethiopia had granted an amnesty to Nigerian prisoners in 2019, a number of Nigerians still found their way back to the country and still committed the same drug-related crimes.
